WIGEON
This duck can get to 500mm long and a wingspan of 850mm. The male in his breeding colours has a grey back and sides, a black rear end, a pinkish breast, white belly and a reddish chestnut head. The head also has a creamy, buff crown and forehead like a flat Mohican. In flight, the rear forewing is dark green with a brilliant white patch on the upper wing. The female is a light brown with a white belly and reddish-brown sides. Both sexes have short bluey grey bills with a black tip.
The wigeon is a Winter visitor here on Kefalonia. They prefer open wetlands, wet grasslands, and marshes with some taller vegetation. They can also be found on lakes and reservoirs. The wigeon is a dabbling duck and feeds by upending in the water looking for aquatic life. They feed on plants, seeds, roots, and shoots. They also like to graze in arable fields and grass near the water's edge. Whilst grazing on the grass, the flock will tend to all face the same way. Livadi Marsh is a great place to spot these ducks in the Winter.
