TZANATA RESERVOIR

Tzanata reservoir is a birdwatching location and water supply for the local villages. It is a relatively new reservoir which was built to meet the increasing Summer demands. There is a layby to park and a flat path all around the reservoir. There is a sheep farm close by and the main Poros to Argostoli road bordering one side. There are fields and trees nearby and beautiful views of the surrounding hills. The reservoir has many reeds along the edges and wildflowers growing all along the path. First thing in the morning, mists roll over the water's surface and provide great photo opportunities.

If you are quiet, then it is possible to see the little grebes or dabchicks (as they are also known), swimming and diving for food. They nest in the reeds and can be difficult to spot. Cormorants can usually be seen sunning themselves on the platform in the centre of the reservoir as well as various gulls. Hooded crows often fly over as well as buzzards and jays. Grey and squacco herons can be seen fishing as well as moorhens. In the reeds, marsh frogs call and dragonflies flit around hunting and defending their territories. With the abundance of wildflowers along the path, you can see numerous insects including many butterflies and bees.
