KATELIOS
Katelios is a small resort, with springs and a long sandy beach along Mounda Bay, between Skala and Lourdas, on the southeast coast. Originally, a small fishing village, it is now a popular destination for tourists. Behind the main beach which is called Agia Varvara there is some scrubland which boasts many butterflies, mantids, lizards and birds. Behind the scrubland are terraced hills and cliffs. Where Agia Varvara joins the hotels, restaurants and tavernas, there is a spring which has formed a small creek. There is a wooden bridge fording the creek, if you do not wish to get your feet wet.
As I mentioned above, the scrubland has a variety of wildlife to offer. Red-veined darters use the top of the bushes to survey their territories, as well as the European mantis, which waits for a passing meal. Ionian wall lizards and both of the Algyroides lizards can be seen with some patience. Stonechats, barn and red-rumped swallows, house martins and woodchat shrikes can be seen hawking over the scrubland and buzzards and kestrels patrol the skies over the cliffs.
The creek has an abundance of dragonflies, in fact, all the dragonflies on my website have been seen here. The creek is also home to marsh frogs and Balkan terrapins which can be seen swimming or basking on logs. I have seen kingfishers and grass snakes here too, but they are rarer. Where the creek runs into the sea, hooded crows, collared doves, plovers and squacco herons, feed.
