RED FOX
Having seen lots of foxes in the UK, (not on Lundy), I was hopeful that I could photograph them here. Well, I have spotted a few, even a black one, but they are very secretive on this island. There is a lot of hunting with guns on Kefalonia, and this has made them very wary of humans. Although I am out early every morning, I have never heard a fox cry out here. Again, I think they have adapted to all the hunting by being quiet and staying hidden. I usually write a description in this part, but I do not think it is necessary for this species, as foxes are so well known.
On Kefalonia the fox will live close to human habitation but not in the towns or Argostoli. Near farms, or on the outskirts of villages, the fox will make its den. They are opportunistic feeders and will eat anything that they can catch. Rodents, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and farm animals, especially chickens, are all on the menu. Unfortunately, you will mostly see foxes as roadkill. I have spotted them before sunrise mostly, but they will be more active when they have cubs to feed in the Spring. As you can see from the photographs, they are not easy to capture.
