SONG THRUSH
The song thrush is a welcome Winter visitor here on the island, but it heads to Northern Europe for breeding in the late Spring. Both sexes have similar plumages. The upperparts are brown, the chest is a buff yellow, and the belly is white or off-white. The chest and belly are covered in black spots which look like arrow heads or inverted hearts. The underwing is a rusty buff colour, but is only seen in flight. Its main identification is its wonderful song, which is always a joy to hear.
The song thrush should be welcomed to your garden as they love snails and will often have a favourite stone or rock (anvil), to break open the shells. As well as snails, the song thrush will eat worms and insects. Here, in the Winter, they can be found in orchards, olive groves, gardens and well vegetated hillsides. Due to their friendly nature, they unfortunately fall victim to the many cats that thrive here.
