WALL

This butterfly has a wingspan of 38 to 47mm. It is called the wall butterfly or the wall brown and can be found over central and southern Europe. The upper wings of both sexes are a glorious reddish-brown colour with black markings and black spots, centred with white dots. The male forewing has a wide dark band which is missing on the female. The underside of the wings are patterned with yellow spots which surround black spots with a white dot in the centre.

Grassy and rocky areas with stoney ground and walls are the best habitats for the wall butterfly. They prefer areas with sparce vegetation and plenty of sunlight so they can bask on rocks and walls. The adult butterfly or imago flies between April and October and can produce up to 3 generations in that time. The caterpillars are whitish green, dotted with white. From the larger of these white dots emerge grey bristles. The caterpillars feed on grasses.
