PYGMY SKIPPER
This is a small dark brown skipper which has the alternative name of the dark hottentot, and a wingspan of just 30 to 34mm. The male's upper wings are dark brown with no spots, whereas as the female has small, pale spots on the upper forewing. They both have plain grey-brown underwings with a few spots.
They are seen between April and November in coastal areas. The pygmy skipper prefers very hot, rocky environments in the lowlands and can be seen in these habitats up to 1800m. The larva feed on grasses, with the adults having 2 to 3 broods during this time. The Mediterranean skipper is slightly larger and a lighter colour.
