MEDITERRANEAN SKIPPER
A dark coloured skipper found in Southern Europe along the Mediterranean coast. This is a small butterfly, having a wingspan of 29 to 36mm. The female upper wings are a greyish brown with some light coloured spots, whereas the males are similarly coloured but lacking the spots. The underwings of both sexes are a grey brown colour with no spots. At a glance, these butterflies appear furry, due to the front edge of the hind wing being hairy.
The Mediterranean skipper likes extremely hot, rocky habitats, of which it has plenty on Kefalonia. The adult butterfly can be seen between April and November. They have 2 to 3 broods during this time. The larvae or caterpillars feed on various grasses. There is a pygmy skipper which is identical in appearance to the Mediterranean skipper, except being a little smaller. You do not see the 2 species together.
