EASTERN DAPPLED WHITE

The dappled white is split into 3 species which are dependent on their location. The Western dappled white is restricted to Spain and parts of France. The mountain dappled white lives in the Alps, Pyrenees and Cantabrian mountains, while the Eastern dappled white is found from Italy and Sicily Eastwards in Europe. There are some overlaps between the species, but here in Greece we can be fairly positive the dappled whites we see are of the Eastern variety.

Kefalonia map-10.png

A cracking little butterfly, with beautiful green and white markings on the underside of the wings and white with black markings on the uppers. The individuals I have photographed have had wonderful yellow eyes.

These butterflies prefer hot and dry agricultural land, roadsides and warm South facing slopes. They like to eat crucifers or members of the cabbage family to you and me. The ones I have spotted so far have been along the beach roads on the South of Kefalonia.
