BLACK MUD BEE

Unfortunately, there is very little information about the black mud bee in any of my reference books or the internet. I can tell you that they are approximately 14 to 18mm in length. The black mud bee surprisingly enough is all black, but the males have brownish hairs on the last 3 segments of the abdomen and both sexes have pale hairs between the first 2 segments. Their wings also appear dark.

Black mud bees favour grasslands for feeding. They build very hard mud nests in which they lay a solitary egg with a small amount of honey for food. The usual placement of the nests are rocks and walls, but I can attest that they also like window and door frames. The nest starts off cup shaped and is only closed over after egg laying.
