The violet dropwing is a very adaptable species, tolerating a wide range of habitats. They can be seen flying near sluggish rivers, marshes and beside still water ponds. The larvae develop quickly, so these dragonflies can make use of temporary water bodies for breeding. The males are often seen perching on the twigs of waterside vegetation and on rocks and pebbles in the sunshine, which makes them easy to photograph. April to October is the best time to spot the adults.
