THE BEAUTIFUL DEMOISELLE

This gorgeous damselfly is often mistaken for a dragonfly, due to their size, with a body length of 49 to 54mm (just over 2 in), and a hind wing reaching 37mm in length. Due to the extensive pigmentation in the wings, these damselflies can look quite dark. The wings of the male are metallic blue, with the thorax and slim abdomen being a metallic blue-green colour. Immature males have brown wings. The females, have dark brown iridescent wings with a white spot near the wing tip. They have metallic green bodies with a bronze tip on the abdomen.

Beautiful demoiselles live mainly near small to medium-sized streams, with a moderate to fast flow. Due to the strong currents, the larvae need water plants for something to hang on to. The adult female will lay up to 300 eggs on floating and submerged plants. The eggs hatch after 14 days and take 2 years to mature. The larvae are very similar in appearance to the banded demoiselle larvae. The larvae moult up to 12 times during the 2-year larval stage, before emerging for the final moult into the imago or adult.
