SCARLET DARTER
The scarlet darter or broad scarlet, as it is also known, is a common site in Southern Europe. This small dragonfly, which can reach a length of 33 to 44mm, has a flattened and somewhat broad abdomen. The easily identifiable males are bright scarlet from head to abdomen, whereas the females are a light brown with a white dorsal stripe on the thorax.
The scarlet darter has a wide range of habitats, including, both still and running water. The only habitats that this species tends to ignore are shaded areas, preferring to bask in the sunshine. It can often be found some distance from water. They are common all over Kefalonia and can be seen flying from between March and October.
